Uncle Jerry Bak Kut Teh - Kepong Baru

I walked by Uncle Jerry BKT a few times. What attracted me was that this BKT place offers not just the usual pork BKT, but also a few other options such as chick kut teh, and mutton kut teh!

I finally made a visit there but since it was my first time there, I decided to try the normal pork BKT first. The mutton and/or chick kut teh will have to wait till my subsequent visits.

Pork BKT with a mix of everything. The soup was the slightly dark type but not too strong in herbal taste. Lots of MSG though like most other BKT.

The staff brought me these without even asking me first. Too much for one person but I managed to stuff them all in. The taufu poks were quite nice and tender.

You'll get an extra bowl of soup too but unfortunately, it was cold. Not even warm.

The soup must be loaded with MSG as I felt so thirsty for the next few hours.

Three types of rice to choose from: plain, yau fan (oil rice/fragrant rice), and wu tau fan (yam rice). I chose yam rice. Really nice and fragrant. Yum.

The bill came to RM19 for the claypot of BKT, taufu pok, yau zhar gwai and a glass of hot chrysanthemum.

Edit: a different visit. I ordered Mutton Kut Teh this time.

Mutton Kut Teh. You can go for either the dry version or the soup version. This one is dry.

Lao Zi Hao Bak Kut Teh-Kepong Baru

Lao Zi Hao Bak Kut Teh, (老字號肉骨茶) Kepong Baru. I actually didn't come here for the BKT. In fact I didn't even know there was one there. The only reason I walked in was because of the RM10 per tilapia fish banner! LOL.

Anyway, I ordered a single portion with everything in, but with less fat meat.

The "yau fun" (oily rice/fragrant rice) was nice. Fragrant but not overly so till it interferes with the taste and flavour of the soup.

RM12 per pax. "Shang Kuat" (fresh pork rib) available at RM15 per pax. I think you'll need to call ahead for that. Off on Monday.

It came to RM13 for the BKT, oily rice and hot Chinese tea.

After 4 pm, this place offers "dai chao" as well. In fact, it was the RM10 per fish (tilapia) that attracted me to walk in in the first place!

Pepper Bak Kut Teh@SekMeChoy restaurant

First, a little bit of background info on SekMeChoy, from its Facebook page:

SekMeChoy’s Bak Kut Teh has had a history of more than 20 years, it is one of the first shops in the whole of Malaysia to start making Pepper Bak Kut Teh. In 2006, it was chosen as one of the “Top 20 National Kings of Bak Kut Teh”.

SekMeChoy's signature dish - Pepper bak kut teh. RM11 per pax. I ordered mine with everything - ribs, innards, tau pok (bean curd puff), pig tripe - in it!

It was really different from any other herbal bak kut teh I have tried. Distinctively peppery and flavorful.

Vegetable Rice, RM2.00. A little pricey but really good! You can just eat this on its own! In fact, I think it would be better that way to fully enjoy this flavorful bowl of rice with lots of goodies in it - mustard greens, fragrant deep fried shallot, dried shrimps, pork.

Besides bak kut teh, SekMeChoy also serves a few other dishes like vinegar pork, braised ginger duck, tilapia in special sauce, stewed pork with mui choy (sweet preserved vegetable).

I was there on a week day at around 1 pm. Wasn't very busy. My order arrived within ten minutes or less.

Wing Kee Bak Kut Teh - Rawang

Ever since I tried the dry bak kut teh in Tanjong Karang I have always wanted to find similar dish in KL that is equally good, or at least close to it. I haven't found any yet!

I was told about Wing Kee in Rawang so I figured I would give it a try. Been there a couple of times but it was closed on both visit! :P

I went back there again a few days ago but lucky me, it was open!

I ordered the Dry bak kut teh, of course!

The soup was nice with just the right amount of herbal taste and pepper.

And of course, you can consume as much as freshly cut chilies and garlic as you want!
 R0020195 copy

Total: RM13.40 including a glass on hot Chinese tea.

It was good, but I sensed too much MSG, both in the soup and also the dry BKT. Also, I still prefer the one in Tanjong Karang with dried cuttlefish in it. The dried cuttlefish really added a very unique and irreplaceable flavor to the dish!

I was there early, at around 11:30am and they were just getting ready so I had to wait quite a bit. But there were lots of cooking activities going on and they didn't mind that I took their photos.
