Lor Mee - Restoran HYB Sungai Indah

Ulu Yam Lor Mee at Restoran HYB Sungai Indah.

I have tried this type of lor mee in a few different restaurants in KL and I must say they all tasted the same, and similar to this one in Ulu Yam itself. Very heavy in seasoning, including vinegar. Also left me quite thirsty for a couple of hours after eating.

However, after a visit to the original Ulu Yam lor mee here, I find myself liking the more toned down version there. The home-made noodle there was also way more superior. Al dente when served.

The one here was, however, soft and soggy. Not very good.

I liked how they put the bowl on a big plate though.

Bella Tom Yam@Ulu Yam

I am not sure if Bella Tom Yam sells tom yam because when we were there at 12 noon, we saw only nasi campur. But I am sure they do that maybe at night.

Chicken curry, eggplant with beef innards and jantung pisang (banana inflorescence) with sambal.


No ikan keli this time. Hehe. They did have ikan keli but they didn't look nice. Dry and not enough chili on them so I passed. I went for jantung pisang (banana inflorescence) instead - something which I had always wanted to try!


I didn't know the chili eggplant came with innards. Not that I would have minded, just that I thought those were cockles :D. Anyway, I am always willing to try new things!









3 plates of nasi campur and 3 glasses of iced beverage cost RM20.40. A little on the high side for this kampung area eatery I think.

As soon as you reach the T junction of Ulu Yam, make a right and you will see Bella Tom Yam on your left.

Chuan Kee Original Ulu Yam Lor Mee

Whenever I stop over at Ulu Yam for food, Ulu Yam Lor Mee is something that I almost always order. The part of Ulu Yam that most non locals (including me) are familiar with is Ulu Yam Baru. I had noticed that there was a Ulu Yam Lama but never really knew where it was until a few days ago!

My friend told me that this restaurant was the first and original lor mee in Ulu Yam.

Part I - a simple lunch at Chuan Kee, Ulu Yam Lama.

A plate of Hokkien Noodle for two. Only RM9.00.

The noodle was home made with minimal lye water. The owner told us that it will last no more than 3 days compared to those commercially type that will last up to one week.

Nice thick gravy. It was very nice.




Part II - dinner at the same restaurant the following day.

The original Ulu Yam Lor Mee. My friend told me that this was the first lor mee restaurant in Ulu Yam. The same type of home made noodle was used for this lor mee.

Vinegar pre-added to the bowl of noodle. You can add more to your own bowl to your liking. I did.



They called this lor bak (braised pork). Absolutely too fat for our taste. The owner explained that the only pork supplier in town is only willing to supply inferior cut like this to the restaurant.


Saito fish cake(西刀鱼饼). Very nice!


This shop's home made noodles are available for sale too. Each bag is RM3.50


RM3.50 per bag.


The lor mee, fish paste and lor bak, a glass of iced Chinese tea, a cup of boiled water, and a bag of noodle came to RM29.00

Sang Har Meen. RM8/100g. This plate cost RM53. The boss gave us extra noodle for free.

A little pricey but very nice.

Curry Fish head-WK Restaurant Ulu Yam

I was in Ulu Yam at around noon time and saw this fish head curry restaurant that was already quite full. I figured it must be good so I walked in a got myself a table, probably the last two available at that time.

And I ordered fish head curry, of course!


It wasn't really my type of fish head as I prefer the more tender type of fish such as red snapper. Grouper was used in this restaurant I believe. Beside this, I also prefer the head to be whole and not cut into pieces as in this case.

I didn't really enjoy the curry gravy either because curry powder was heavily used. I prefer the type made from freshly ground curry paste. However, for RM15, you really can't complain too much. It was still quite an enjoyable meal.











Total: RM 16.30 including one hot Chinese tea.

In KL, I would go to this one.
