Penang Char Kueh Teow in Kepong

A member of The Makan Club on Facebook posted about authentic Penang "sar hor fun" in Taman Bukit Maluri, Kepong and also mentioned that the char kueh teow there was good. Barely a few days later, I checked out both the char kueh teow and "char tua pan" (Penang style sar hor fun).

Yummy char kway teow. Full of "wok hei" and tasted very good. The "siham" (cockles) were a little overcooked but that's minor. Although it looked a little pale, the taste was very good!

A different visit. I go there quite regularly.

In fact, I think this is my fave so far compared to this, this and this.

The following day, I went back again and tried the Penang style "sar hor fun" (char tua pan). It was really nice too. RM5.50

I have also tried the Wat Dan Hor. RM6.00

Frankly I am not too sure what the difference is between Wat Dan Hor and Tua Pan :P, except this one cost 50 sen more :P. Go figure.

You can see the menu on the back of the banner! Yep, banner, not white board!

Char Kway Teow - Goggles-man Lorong Selamat

This char kway teow stall is just a few shops away from the famous Auntie CKT.

RM8. Same price as the other one I think(?). The taste was quite okay but I think I still prefer the other one i.e Auntie CKT as hers is fried with charcoal fire whereas this one is with gas.

Quite good, but I think the one across the road is slightly better.

Char Kway Teow@Sri Sinar Food Court

So I was in the mood for char kway teow that day and I happened to notice this CKT stall in the newly opened Sri Sinar Food Court. I decided to give it a try.

I tried to communicate in Hokkien with the guy who manned the stall but he replied in Mandarin. Not good. Worse, he sounded like he wasn't local but probably from mainland China? I could be wrong though as it wasn't easy to make a clear judgement in such a short period.

Anyway, I specifically ordered: Char Kway Teow (large) with extra chili. I was shocked when I was this delivered to my table a few minutes later!

char kway teow with yellow noodle? OMG. I didn't even ask for yellow noodle as I hate yellow noodle! It was very oily too. I wouldn't have minded if it were tasty, but it was just flat. I didn't notice any extra chili as requested either.

Absolutely the worst char kway teow I have ever tasted!

RM4.80 for large. RM4.30 for normal.

Char Kway Teow - Happy City Food Court

I was in Happy City Food court today. It was past 1:30pm and my stomach was growling. Not willing to look around any longer so I settled for char kway teow.

I nearly walked away when I saw that the cook was a foreign worker! But I stayed.

Char Kway Teow. RM4.50 only, 3 medium prawns and some cockles. No lap cheong though.

Surprisingly, it was quite good. Full of "wok hei". Not fond of the thick, fat hor fun (flat noodle) though but overall, I still enjoyed my plate of char kway teow.

Char Kway Teow - Joo Hooi Cafe

Joo Hooi cafe is normally always packed because it's so close to Komtar and very easy to find. Most of the patrons are local tourists, I think.

Char Kway Teow with duck egg. RM5.50 I think. Can't remember.

Char Kueh Teow - PJ State

I am always on the look-out for nice char kueh teow / char kway teow / char kuey teow / char koay teow in KL/PJ so when I heard someone claimed that this stall fries the best CKT in the Klang Valley, I immediately went there to try it out.

This stall is one of the many in Kam Heong coffee shop. The prawn mee there is okay too, and at night, they sell really great Teochew style braised duck / lo ack / lou ngap.

I must say as soon as I saw my plate of CKT, I knew it was going to be great. First, I don't like my kueh teow noodle to be too thick and wide. The noodles were all short and broken too. I like my kueh teow noodles to be thin, narrow, and smooth, and they must not stick together. You need to "massage" your kueh teow noodles and separate those that stick together prior to frying.

Taste wise, it didn't do it for me either. I think the one I like the best so far in the KL/PJ is this one.

Char Kueh Teow - PJ Old Town

So I heard about another place with great char kueh teow / char kuey teow / char kway teow / char koay teow. I made a visit and again, was rather disappointed.

More or less the same type of wide and thick kuey teow that the stall in PJ State is using. Even the style of frying was quite similar too. Can't say I enjoyed it. It was just okay!

Penang Char Kueh Teow - Damansara Perdana

Char kueh teow / char kway teow / char kuey teow / char koay teow, or whatever you want to call it, at Restoran 8888, Damansara Perdana. The owner is from Penang.

The char kueh teow looked great, and tasted quite good too. But not as much "wok hei" as I would have liked. Probably because I got there ahead of the lunch crowd and was the first place he fried for the day?

But it was still very good and I have no doubt I will go back there again and I am ready to brave the Damansara Perdana traffic and parking woes.

Char Kueh Teow Section 17

I seldom order Char Kueh Teow in KL/PJ because almost all of them are really no good at all, even though most claim they are from Penang :D. After a lot of googling, I finally found a place that most food bloggers seem to recommend.

So I made it there yesterday.

Robert's char kueh teow, Say Huat coffee shop, Section 17
robert's char kueh teow section 17 say huat coffee shop R0018936 copy

It has all the essential ingredients of a good char kueh teow: lap cheong (Chinese sausage), cockles, prawns; chives, bean sprouts, lards. Oh, Roberts speaks Penang Hokkien too!

say huat section 17 char kueh teow R0018935 copy

However, I notice that there was no banana leaf in my plate. From what I saw in other blogger's photos, banana leaves were used.

robert's char kueh teow R0018931 copy

robert's char kueh teow R0018932 copy

Anyway, I find it just okay. A bit too dry (probably not enough oil?) and not enough wok hei. Still good enough to satisfy my craving whenever I feel like having a plate of  CKT. The other place I recommend is near Taman Metropolitan Batu, near Jalan Ipoh. The location is here. I will go there again and do a more post on this one.

Edit: i have since tried more CKTs from quite a few outlets and the one I like the best is this one.

The serving was quite small so I ordered a bowl of asam laksa. It was not too bad.

Char Kueh Teow, Sri Sinar KL

CKT in Chu Yu kopitiam, Taman Sri Sinar, KL.

Of course, this being KL, you can expect the CKT here to be as good as say Lorong Selamat CKT or Dato Keramat Ah Leng CKT, or even Jalan Siam CKT in Penang.

One of the two ladies saw me photographing my plate of CKT so she offered to place a banana leaf on the plate for me. :)

Pretty good for KL standard. This CKT stall is open for lunch only. Not open at night but Chu Yu kopitiam is open at night too. Nice "dai chao" for dinner.

The BBQ chicken is really good too!
