Pepper Bak Kut Teh@SekMeChoy restaurant

First, a little bit of background info on SekMeChoy, from its Facebook page:

SekMeChoy’s Bak Kut Teh has had a history of more than 20 years, it is one of the first shops in the whole of Malaysia to start making Pepper Bak Kut Teh. In 2006, it was chosen as one of the “Top 20 National Kings of Bak Kut Teh”.


SekMeChoy's signature dish - Pepper bak kut teh. RM11 per pax. I ordered mine with everything - ribs, innards, tau pok (bean curd puff), pig tripe - in it!

It was really different from any other herbal bak kut teh I have tried. Distinctively peppery and flavorful.




Vegetable Rice, RM2.00. A little pricey but really good! You can just eat this on its own! In fact, I think it would be better that way to fully enjoy this flavorful bowl of rice with lots of goodies in it - mustard greens, fragrant deep fried shallot, dried shrimps, pork.




Besides bak kut teh, SekMeChoy also serves a few other dishes like vinegar pork, braised ginger duck, tilapia in special sauce, stewed pork with mui choy (sweet preserved vegetable).

I was there on a week day at around 1 pm. Wasn't very busy. My order arrived within ten minutes or less.

Lui Cha Manjalara

My first experience with Lei Cha / Lui Cha was about a year or two ago in Hor Poh Tmn Sri Sinar. I found it quite pleasant and healthy so I have been looking to trying this dish from other restaurants/stalls ever since. A friend told me about this place some time ago and before long, I was there to check it out.

Hakka Lui Cha. Some say the corn shouldn't be there. It didn't bother me at all though.


I don't like to pour the whole bowl of soup into my rice mixture so it's just one spoonful at a time for me :D




Price: RM5.50. There was probably a little bit of MSG in it as I felt slightly thirsty a while after eating this but not to the extend that would bother me. The broth was probably slightly watery compared to the one I had in Hor Poh Tmn Sri Sinar, but it wouldn't be fair to compare a RM10 a bowl lui cha to a RM5.50 one.

It's just a rustic roadside stall, about two stalls away from Tuck Kee dim sum. Open for lunch only. I was there at about 2:30pm on day and it was still open. I was there on a Thursday and it was closed! I will try to find out more on the operation hours.

This place is probably less than 1km from Tesco Kepong/Manjalara.

RM 12.00 for the 3 items above, inclusive of a glass of hot chinese tea. Not cheap. Taste wise, so so.
