I have heard so much about Poon Choi but have never had a chance to try it so when a friend suggested Restoran LYJ, we made reservation and a few weeks later, 12 of us gathered there in Restoran LYJ for a wonderful dinner together.
Since I have been to Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh a few times, and I checked out the location on google map, it was really easy to find the restaurant.
Restoran LYJ Poon Choi. We ordered the most basic version i.e no abalone, no scallops or other expensive ingredient.
What's in it? Roast duck, fried prawns, poached free range chicken, boneless stuffed fish, broccoli, cauliflower, dried oysters, chestnuts, braised chicken feet, braised pork, mushrooms etc. Warning: it's very oily :D
Dong Duk Gai. Served as it was. You were provided with a pair of scissors, and gloves. We made a few cuts and started to rip the flesh out.
Deep Fried Fish with petai
The sauces in the Poon Choi and the deep fried fish were all on the heavy side. Best to go with steamed rice. You wouldn't be able to eat the dishes on their owns. I wouldn't call these great, but if you haven't tried it, it is really worth trying, especially with a bunch of friends :)
The Poon Choi was RM288 and came with a complimentary plate of stir fried watercress (sai yeung choi). The Poon Choy alone was enough to feed 12 adults, but we ordered Dong Duk Gai and Fried fish with Petai too. It all came to about RM380 including the Dong Duk Gai and Deep fried fish with petai. That's about RM32 each for 12 pax.
