Roast Pork and Duck-Zhin Ngai Seng

My Ipoh friend brought me to this Restoran Zhin Ngai Seng in Taman Cempaka, Ipoh. He told me it's his favourite roast chicken shop.

As I just had chicken the night before, I opted for roast pork and duck. RM8.30. Self service. You have to wait for your food and bring it to the table yourself.

I didn't hold my expectation too high for a place like this. I first tried the roast duck. It was okay with flavorful meat but the skin wasn't the crispy type I like.

Next, I tried the siew yuk/roast duck. Wow, I was pleasantly surprised. Nice crunchy skin, and really flavorful meat. Totally unexpected.

Lou Wong tauge chicken

My Ipoh friend brought me to Lou Wong tauge chicken for dinner. I stopped going Lou Wong and On Kee as well since quite some time ago because they were too touristy. I prefer other shops like Cowan Street, 15 Tower, and Pak Kong.

The chicken was okay but the sauce was too strong and overpowering. I like the type in Cowan Street better - milder sauce with lots of sesame oil in it.

It was nice but a little too soft for my liking. I wished the balls were firmer and more bouncy.

Sorry, forgot to take images of the shop itself. Maybe next time. Low Wong and Onn Kee are huge so you won't miss them.

Ipoh chicken Hor Fun - Loke Wooi Kee

Whenever I travel up north, I always stop over in Ipoh for a short break to either have a light snack, or just to stretch my legs, and also to buy a couple of the ayam garam (salt-baked chicken) from Aun Kheng Lim.

Some of my favorite places are all within a stone's throw from one another so I just park at one spot and walk! You can find the other three spots - Pak Kong chicken rice, Ayam Garam Aun Kheng Lim and Funny Mountain  all in one map here.

Lok Wee Koi coffee shop is also only a few steps from Aun Kheng Lim, opposite Kamdar.

I have tried the rojak in this coffee shop and it was okay but I still prefer the ones in Gurney Drive, Penang best!

Ipoh chicken hor fun / kai si hor fun. The hor fun was really smooth and the broth nice and sweet and strong prawn flavor!

It says "乐会居" on this dark dark signage:D. It's a corner unit facing Kamdar and i think there is a bigger banner on the side side. However, it was raining and I couldn't go outside to take that pic to show you so maybe next time!

Edit: separate visit

Hor Hee. Nothing special. Just hor fun with fish cakes, fish ball. Yawn. I much prefer chicken hor fun!

Tau Fu Fa - Funny Mountain

Whenever I travel up north, I always stop by Ipoh for a quick snack, and a bowl of tau fu fa, if there's still room in my stomach :D

Ultra smooth tau fu fa from Funny Mountain.

Although it's only RM0.90, the portion was really small. I could swallow this in two gulps :P. I wanted brown sugar syrup but they only had the regular syrup :(.

There is a short bench if you want to be seated, but no tables. You either sit on the bench and eat your tau fu fa or stand and eat :D

Just 20 or 30 meters away, there is another shop, Lai Kee, which I have tried. The tau fu far was very nice too and you get a choice of the plain syrup, brown sugar syrup and palm sugar syrup. You can sit down and enjoy your tau fu far properly. Lai Kee also advertises on its banner that says no calcium sulfate (Gypsum,石膏) used in the making of its tau fu fah.

I checked everywhere at Funny Mountain but didn't see similar announcement.

Fifteen Tower Tauge Chicken - Ipoh

I was in Ipoh one evening and thought of going for taugeh chicken at Cowan Street. I got there are around 6:30pm but there was totally no sign that it was going to open. Then I thought about Fifteen Tower. Even though I had never been there, finding the place was quite easy as I had the location under my Garmin's POIs.

Silky smooth flat noodle (hor fun). The soup was a little too sweet though but still not too bad. Some MSG in it from what I can tell during and after eating.

Plump, juicy, crunchy nga choy/ bean sprout that I can't seem to get elsewhere but only in Ipoh!

Ipoh Pak Kong Chicken Rice

Ipoh is my favorite place for stopping over whenever I travel in between KL and Penang. I love the Nga Choi Gai there because the bean sprouts in Ipoh are plump and crunchy. Yum yum. You just can't get the same bean sprouts elsewhere.

I actually prefer to go to Cowan Street Taugeh Chicken but it opens only from 7pm onwards. I don't like touristy places like Lou Wong and On Kee so Pak Kong is a good alternative for me.

Salted vegetable soup (haam choy tong) will be served once you have placed your order. It's simple but nice.

Free flow of home made ginger sauce and chilli sauce, go really well with the poached chicken. Yum. Oh i mixed the two sauces.

I ordered acar, bean sprout and poached chicken for one.

The acar was quite nice, not great, but good.

The bean sprout wasn't good though. Overcooked but that's to be expected because this was cooked in advance. I prefer the more popular serving method in Ipoh where they blanch the bean sprouts and add seasoning and sauces just before serving!

The poached chicken was, however, not bad.

Cowan Street Taugeh Chicken, Ipoh

I think this is one of the best taugeh chicken shops in Ipoh. Way better that the touristy Lou Wong and Onn Kee.

The tauge was plumb and as crunchy, as always but the chicken wasn't as good though..maybe i should have avoided drumstick.
