Teochew Fish Ball noodle Kepong Baru

Teochew fish ball noodle, Kepong Baru. The name of the stall is "Tai Chan Dit"

I ordered dry lo shu fun. RM4.50 (S). There was a sign that says the noodles were all home made and free of preservative, borax, lye, coloring etc.


You can probably tell from the first two images that the pork lard pieces were quite fresh and indeed they were. Nice, fragrant and crispy! They really added a lot of flavor to this dish. Very little minced meat though.


The bowl of noodle was very tasty, but a little too much MSG in it. The fish balls tasted just okay to me but then again, I am not really into fish balls or any kind of balls. I prefer the real thing - real fish, real meat etc.







This place is just a few steps away from the "tong shui" place in Kepong Baru.

Chai Kueh - Jawi

This is another one of the three authentic Jawi Chai Kueh in Sungai Bakap.

There are three good ones in Sungai Bakap/Jawi:

#1 - the original one, opposite a roast duck/pork shop, near Jln Badak Mati/Jln Besar intersection. Also quite near the police station.

#2 - the newer one (relatively speaking), same row as Ambank

#3 - another newer one (this one), somewhat opposite #2 and next to a roast duck/pork shop.

This is from #3.

The standard, must have, Chinese chives filling chai kueh :)


A closer look.


Another popular filling is sengkuang/jicama. Different, but still very good. I like both.



This one was with pumpkin filling. First time for me. I guess it will take time to get used to this new flavour but I appreciate the effort they put in to create new flavours.




I also ordered yam/taro paste (Or Nee). Not very good though but I was comparing it to the one in Ding Tai Fung, which wasn't very fair at all :D


Fried cellophane noodle (Hokkien/Teochew - tanghoon, Cantonese - Dongfun)


This is the shop, which is just somewhat opposite the first one I reviewed. There are a total of three chai kueh restaurants in Jawi - the first and original one, and these two relatively new ones.


Kedai Makan Hwa Aik is just next to Restoran Soon Lee Hou.


However, I didn't like both the roast duck and roast pork at all.

The duck skin was completely soft and the meat wasn't very flavorful. The roast duck's skin was quite crunchy but the fat and lean part weren't up to par with the best I have tried.

Quan Le Yan Seafood, Singapore

After our morning  macro workshop  in Singapore, all of us went to this nice Teochew restaurant in Tiong Bahru for some wonderful Teochew cuisine.



Teochew style steamed pomfret. One of the best ways to enjoy nice fresh fish. My other choice would be Cantonese style steamed fish.


Teochew style braised duck, Lor Ack. If you are in KL and want to get really good one, try Kam Heong in PJ.


Pork jelly. Braised pig's leg made into jelly form, sliced and served cold.


Oyster omelette.

There was one more dish - kangkong belacan, which I didn't photograph. Too busy chowing down the great food:D

We wanted yam paste /taro paste as well but it was all sold out :(

One for the album while waiting for the food to be served :)

Chai Kueh

I may be biased but i think the best Teochew chai kueh can only be found in Sungai Bakap :D

There are three authentic Jawi Chai Kueh outlets in Sungai Bakap:

Teochew chai kueh in Sungai Bakap


There are two types. This type is with chives and dried shrimp filling


Soft, thin, translucent skin that breaks quite easily when touched


Another type with stir fried jicama and dried shrimp filling.


I like both!


There are other dim sum items as well, but most people go there just for the chai kueh!




There are three Chai Kueh restaurants in Sungai Bakap. This is the one i normally go to.

Ah Boy Teochew Porridge

I forgot how salty the salted fish was and took too much of it :P


You can go for either the plain Teochew porridge


Or the type with sweet potato!

Restoran Setapak Teochew

My first time at this place and we ordered two really sinful dishes for 3 persons:D. We couldn't finished them!

Fried Peh Ge (白粿). The Hokkien Noodle was great, but this fried "Peh Ge" was simply too awesome:D Yes, you do get chunky, crunchy lards in these!

Slightly pricey though. These two dishes and 4 iced white coffee came to RM36.

Fish Ball Noodle - Restoran Min Yee

Very nice Teochew style fish ball noodle behind Plaza Sri Sinar.

I ordered the dry type (kon lou)







The fish balls are really great. Firm and springy to the bite!
