Restoran Heng Hwat - Selayang Baru

I posted about the rather pricey (but very good) RM8.60 roast duck rice in Menjalara and a friend of mine suggested I try out this place. I actually made it there just the following day!

I ordered a mix of siew yuk (roast pork), char siew (bbq pork) and siew ngap (roast duck). All in one plate.
R0022337 copy
All three items were not very good. Quite tough and chewy. No crunchy, crispy skin on the siew yuk.

Just the same plate but from a different angle!
R0022336 copy

Again, the same plate.
R0022335 copy

Only RM9.00 for this plate, including rice, and hot Chinese tea. Really quite cheap.

Woo Pin Fish head noodle - Seri Kembangan

This Woo Pin fish head noodle stall is one of the stalls in Kedai Makanan dan Minuman Hing Fatt. Not too far from South City Plaza.

RM7.50. The deep fried shallot was a little stale and not crispy, nor very fragrant. The fish was just okay in term of freshness.
fish head noodle R0022321 copy
As usual, no milk, and non-fried fish.

The taste was just acceptable for me. Better than the Menjalara branch in my opinion.

About 830am on a Sunday morning and this place was already quite packed.

Chong Fatt Cafe - Setapak

I first heard about this place a couple of years back and never really had the urge to check it out. Then a few weeks ago, after a fish head curry dinner in Setapak, we drove past this place. I had no idea it was just behind Pa Ka Seng restaurant! A week later, I was there to try out the fish head noodle.

Sang Har and Fish head noodle. RM16.80. There's a 5% service charge too! No government tax.
sang har and fish head noodle R0022315 copy
The fish wasn't very fresh. The sang har (fresh water prawns) was slightly better but still not very good/fresh.

As usual, non fried fish/prawns and no milk for me.

Many other combinations are available.

There is a Chong Fatt seafood restaurant too.

Restoran De Leema - Selayang

Restoran De Leema, Bandar Baru Selayang. This will be a short and quick one. Nothing much to talk about. Just ordinary but ridiculously overpriced nasi campur.

RM9.40 for this including teh o ais limau (iced lemon tea).
nasi campur, restoran de leema R0022261 copy
A small ikan keli (cat fish), paku pakis, and nangka (tua). The quality was quite bad. I bit into chewy and tough paku stems which I had to spit out. Same went for the tough and chewy nangka. Old nangka must have been used instead of young ones.

For about the same $$$, I can have much bigger keli and other great dishes in Anis Putri!!!

Pa Ka Seng Seafood Restoran

Pa Ka Seng seafood restaurant, Setapak. We actually wanted to eat at Peter's fish head curry but for unknown reason, it was closed on that day.

Fish head curry. RM36 for this medium size pot. Lots of vegetables and fish head pieces and meat inside.
fish head curry R0022293 copy

You can probably tell from the look of it that this is the "lemak" type. I think there is no curry powder used. All made from scratch. Love the "lemak" and fragrant curry gravy! I think I have a new fave after Ah Lye in SS19! In fact, i think I like this one better but they are quite different and I don't mind either one!

curry fish head R0022297 copy

The fish meat was really tender which made me think it wasn't grouper fish. But when we checked with the restaurant, we found out that small sized grouper was used. No wonder!
fish head curry, pa ka seng setapak R0022296 copy

Green Dragon vegetable. RM16. The look and texture resemble that of  Chinese chives (gao choy / kuchai) a lot, but the taste was quite different. Really yummy but not cheap!

Edit: 2nd visit.

Again, we ordered fish head curry. RM36
R0022376 copy
The gravy was totally different this time around. Not lemak anymore but a strong taste of curry powder instead.

Stir fried "shu miao". RM12
R0022378 copy

Por Lor Kuat (sweet and sour pork with pineapple). RM15
R0022381 copy

Green dragon vegetable again (RM15) because we loved it the first time around. But see what the chef added to the dish. Bean sprouts? The rawness of the sprout really ruin the exquisite taste of the green dragon vegetable and left a bad taste in our mouth.
R0022384 copy

Two visits, and completely different experience! Totally no consistency and quality control at all!

Coliseum Cafe

I walked past the Coliseum Cafe this noon and since I have heard so much about this place, I decided to check it out.

The set lunch was RM26.90 but after the service charge and government tax, it came to RM31.20!!! You get to choose either roasted chicken or grilled fish. You'd get soup, bread with butter, the main, and coffee.

Soup, bread and butter. Not sure what soup that was. Couldn't tell from the taste and I forgot to ask.

Grilled fish in lemon and butter sauce. I regretted ordering this. I really dislike dory fish but I was hoping that it might be some other type of fish. The sauce wasn't very lemony nor buttery.

Dry Pan Mee in Restoran 2828, Taman Sri Sinar.

Dry pan mee. RM4.50. The noodle tasted quite but the soup was laden with MSG! Made me thirsty for the next couple of hours.

The sambal was nice albeit a little too diluted. Still good. I poured it all into my bowl :D.

AR Coconut Shake - USJ 4

My friends in USJ have been posting about coconut shake on facebook and I have been wanting to try it.

Coconut shake special. RM3.50, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream in it. Normal one without ice cream is RM3.00

Really refreshing especially for a hot day like today! Couldn't really taste the coconut though. Could be due to the ice cream? I will try the normal one without ice cream next time.

Nasi Campur - Tesco Kepong Village

This nasi campur stall is in the food court of Tesco Kepong Village mall, Menjalara.

Ayam rendang (chicken rendang), kerang (cockles) and spinach. RM9 not including any drink!!! The kerang were very chewy! Overcooked, I guess. All the dishes were laden with MSG.
R0022164 copy

Price on the high side compared to a few similar eateries outside, but this one is in an nice, clean, and air conditioned environment!

Similar dishes outside will cost only around RM6 the most I think.

For me, I only ate here because it was convenient and also i was too lazy to make a detour on the way home.

Nasi Campur - No Name, Kepong

This nasi campur restaurant is behind Crystal Crown Hotel in Kepong. Also right next to this salmon fish head noodle restaurant.

Grilled ikan keli (catfish), pajeri nenas, and some unknown vege(?)
nasi campur melayu R0022150 copy
RM7.60 i think. Can't remember. The only thing I remembered was that it was definitely more expensive than this other place I just visited a couple of weeks ago.

Fewer varieties too compared to Gerai Makan Mak Long in Tmn Bkt Maluri.

Nihonkai

Dinner for two at Nihonkai Japanese Restaurant in Dataran Mentari, Petaling Jaya.

Plain Soba noodle, RM9.00. The broth was flavorful and sweet. At first I suspected heavy use of MSG, but I didn't feel very thirsty after eating.

Salmon shioyaki, RM16.00. Minimal seasoning. Just nice and fresh and natural. Cheap too, I think.
