Dinner for two at Nihonkai Japanese Restaurant in Dataran Mentari, Petaling Jaya.

Plain Soba noodle, RM9.00. The broth was flavorful and sweet. At first I suspected heavy use of MSG, but I didn't feel very thirsty after eating.


Salmon shioyaki, RM16.00. Minimal seasoning. Just nice and fresh and natural. Cheap too, I think.


Ramen, RM13.00. Not bad but I prefer the Chinese style La Mian from the likes of Dragon-i and Din Tai Fung.


Gyoza, RM9.00. Juicy and tasty.


Chuka wakame (Sea weed). RM5.00


Inari sushi, RM7.50. Pretty okay.


Wasabi


Total: RM65.45 for two persons.

Xiao Qiu Stinky Tofu

Xiao Qiu chou do fu / stinky tofu (小秋臭豆腐).

I was at the Tuesday night market in Sri Sinar and saw this stall again. I never had the urge to try it but somehow, just decided to try it!

RM2.70 for four pieces. You can smell it from a distance but the smell isn't really that stinky. Nor is the taste.

I can't remember if I have tried this before though. I must have but I really can't remember.

It tastes okay but I guess it's also one of those acquired taste thingies, and one will have to try this stinky tofu a few times to get to really like/love it!

Hanuta hazelnut waffle

Hanuta Haselnuss Schnitte. Kernig. Knusprig. Nussig.

Google translate tells me that means:

Hanuta Hazelnut Slice. Meaty. Crunchy. Nutty.

Anyway, that's what a friend of mine brought back for me from Germany :).





Apparently, it's manufactured by Ferrero, the same company that produces Ferrero Rocher(?).


Each one is nicely wrapped up like this. There is one more square foil on top which is not shown in this pic.


I was told that you get better chocolate in Europe, even if it's the same, exact product. For example, the Ferrero Rocher you get in Europe is more superior than what we get here simply because better chocolate is used over there.


I guess that's not unusual. I have also heard that the xiao long bao's we get here are quite close to what they sell in other countries like Taiwan, but better stock/broth is used. Can anyone verify that?

Kafe Deli Bakery

I was in Kota Damansara to run some errands and recalled that a friend recommended this place for its curry mee.

RM5. Curry hor fun. Only some boring fish balls, fried bean curd (tau fu pok) and long beans. No siham (cockles) or anything else. The only thing that was in abundance was MSG. I was thirsty for the next few hours.


The two stalls near my house serve much better and cheaper curry noodles so I don't see any reason why I would go back for this one here. Having said that, I might still try other dishes in this cafe though if I happen to be in the neighborhood.


Extra large teh o ais limau. RM4.20...wow! Only 2 limau in it. Very stingy! I could taste the tea, but hardly the limau.

No air condition. It's basically like most kopitiam except it has a bakery section as well.



I tried the red bean paste bun. RM1.80. Not bad.

Seafood curry noodle- Restoran Yu Ai

I was in Segambut Utara to run some chores and decided to have an early lunch there! Restoran Yu Ai came to mind.

RM19 for this big bowl. RM17 for small.

It looked really great but tasted just okay. The curry was nice, thick and aromatic, but strongly dependent on curry powder, and at the time of eating, I suspected heavy usage of MSG too.

And of course, as expected, I was very very thirsty for a few hours after eating this bowl of noodle!

There were also fried salmon fillets, small sized lala clams, small oysters and cuttle fish in the bowl.

The curry gravy is quite closed to this one IMO.

For RM19, you get only 4 small/medium small, not very fresh prawns. The heads were almost falling off, and parts of the heads were dark in color already.

You can see how small the lala clams were from the image above.

I went there only because I haven't been there for ages. I know I won't be going back there anytime soon. It's just way over-rated and over-priced. You can buy much cheaper curry noodle from here and add your own seafood!

I might check out Sin Kee just a few doors away though.
